A Brush With Kindess: Volunteer Event 2019


At City Wide, our office regularly gives back to charity with both financial, and time spent support.  On Wednesday this week our office volunteered for A Brush With Kindness through Minnesota Habitat for Humanity. This is the third time we have partnered with Habitat to help someone in our community and the second time that we have painted a house.



We had a great showing of people from the office with over 20 people onsite helping to paint the exterior of a house in Minneapolis.  I somehow ended up on the roof of the car port with one of our CCM’s, Jeff,  painting the portion of the house above it.  Little did I know when I volunteered for that job, I would need to be in a 4 point harness, strapped to a safety cable, which made painting a little more challenging.  Initially it was nice on the roof as it was a little cooler out (especially for August), but by noon, we were roasting up there.  However, we did have a lot of fun!



When we showed up onsite, the house was about 25% of the way painted, and our volunteer time was from 8am-4pm.  However, with he crew that we brought, and the general competitiveness within the group, we had the entire house painted by 1:30pm and ended up leaving early as there wasn’t anything left to do.



It is always great to see our team come together and help others, and I am sure that we will continue to do so regularly.

Heather came to City Wide with a background in the hospitality and property management industry. Heather has a lot of knowledge in the industry and working with cleaners directly.

2019 City Wide BBQ



My favorite City Wide event is in the books and it went off without a hitch as usual! A huge thank you to my wife, Liz for all her efforts  getting everything ready at the house, shopping and prepping an excessive amount of food for 30 adults and kids. 



For a Minnesota company, we know our BBQ and we know it well.  That might be my fault since I’m a bit obsessed and own 4 smokers but we have some other BBQ cooks in our office as well.  Greg, Cory, Shelly’s husband Gabe and Chad to name a few.  I’m thankful we get an opportunity to put on a top notch event every year with Briskets, Pork Shoulders an Ribs versus a burger and brats affair. 



Aside from the food, the real fun is in the relationship building as coworkers, significant others and their kids come together and take over my backyard and basketball court.  We had kids happily squirting water at adults, and we just let it happen, as well as creating “chalk paint” see picture attached, I didn’t know that was a thing but those kids figured it out.






Conversations, relationship building and cleanup went into the later hours of the evening and another great event is in the books.  I received a lot of kind feedback from everyone for hosting and having it at our house, but truly we just appreciate each person that puts in hours and dedication to our business.  Hosting a BBQ is a blast for Liz and I even though it comes with a lot of work.

Welcome, Chad Michaels!

Welcome to City Wide Chad Michaels! We are very excited to have Chad join our team as a new FSM working in a number of different territories and supporting his client base.  

Chad comes to City Wide as a former Collegiate athlete and coach who humbly claims that he played 15 seasons of semi-football in 10 years and continued coaching at Concordia Academy, where he worked with Tyler Olson, our VP of Sales.  Chad’s professional background ranges from leadership in Security to Account Manager and client support for a video service company.

We’ve enjoyed getting to know Chad in the last month since he came on board and has began taking over business from each of our FSMs.  I’m looking forward to meeting Chad’s wife, Kelly, at the City Wide BBQ and continuing to get him up and running, taking over his accounts.

IREM Golf Event

The sales team at City Wide supports and participates in a number of organizations in our industry. One of the biggest organizations we support is IREM.  They put on a great golf event each year at the Minnesota Valley County Club.  This event is a great chance for business partners and cohorts to get out of a professional environment and interact with each other and vendors in a fun low pressure atmosphere.

Every year City Wide sponsors one of the holes and this year was no different.  We sponsored the first hole and were at the tee box to connect with the groups coming through.  This year, one of our Sales Executives, Adam Gustad, and myself were at the event.  

We had some great conversations at the lunch prior to golf, as well as made some great connections during the actual event.  

We look forward to continuing this process in the years to come!

Welcome, Beth Aarness!

I’m thrilled to introduce and welcome to City Wide Maintenance of Minnesota our new Human Resources Manager, Beth Aarness!  As we’ve continued to achieve steady growth, it became apparent that we needed to add a resource to help support our existing team and also help the team grow.  We’re excited to have found Beth to fill that role. 

Beth has extensive HR experience with two larger companies, including overseeing HR functions for a region of the country.  She also has entrepreneurial experience, which I think helps her have a well rounded view of business needs and how she is able to support those in this role.

Beth hit the ground running when she came on board a few weeks ago and has been busy working alongside our team learning all of their roles, while also diving into interviews as we look to hire some new positions.  I look forward to seeing the positive impact that I’m confident she will have.

Shelly Grohovsky | 5-Year Anniversary

This week marks Shelly Grohovsky’s five year work anniversary with City Wide Maintenance of Minnesota.  It’s hard to believe how quickly the time has gone.

As our Bookkeeper, Shelly works diligently on things you might expect, like ensuring that we’re accurately invoicing our clients and paying our vendors.  But over the years Shelly has also helped us out with a lot  additional things that you may not expect from a Bookkeeper, such as managing our blog, sending out snow forecast emails to our clients in the winter and being the unofficial photographer for our office just to name a few.  I appreciate the wide variety of tasks that Shelly has helped us with as we’ve grown.   

In her time with us Shelly has demonstrated a strong sense of duty.  She makes sure that whatever responsibilities have been assigned to her are completed, and more importantly, completed correctly which has made her an asset to our team. 

When I first met Shelly I was a little concerned that she was somewhat quiet.   What I learned though is as soon as she gets to know you she opens up and you get to see the real Shelly, someone who is creative, kind and has a sneaky good sense of humor.   One of my favorite stories involving Shelly and those traits happened last year.  Our team frequently picks up Chipotle for lunch, and one of our employees almost always asks whoever is going to pick up an order of chips and guac for him.  One day, on her way out to Chipotle, Shelly noticed that employee was in the middle of a long phone call in their car in the parking lot.  Determined to want to help him out, and undeterred by the inability to talk to him while he was on that phone call, Shelly drew a picture of a corn chip and an avocado with a question mark and held it up to the car window so that he could give her a thumbs up.  They both shared a good laugh, and fortunately for us a picture was captured so that the rest of our team could share a laugh over the story as well. 

I’m thankful for Shelly’s many contributions to our team as well as the opportunity to get to know her over the past five years and look forward to more in the future.    Thanks Shelly!


Shelly Grohovsky: Bookkeeper

I have been part of the City Wide team for 5 years now, and I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed!  Prior to being hired as the Bookkeeper, I was a stay-at-home mom.  With my older daughter getting ready to start preschool, I myself was ready to switch gears and excited to start my journey with City Wide.  The transition from stay-at-home mom to working mom presented seamless.  From day one, I have been surrounded by an amazing group of peers, whom I feel very fortunate to work with and also call my friends.  Throughout my 5 years my role has continued to evolve, especially as our company has grown, and I enjoy the variety of things that I do to support our team.  Many thanks to my boss, Brian Mansfield, for his support and guidance throughout the way.  He has played a key role in my professional growth and development and I am perpetually grateful for the positive impact he’s had on me.  I look forward to many more years of working with this incredible team and can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Chairman's Club Trip 2018 - Aruba

Last month multiple members of our staff attended the City Wide Chairman’s Club trip to Aruba. The crew included Ryan Sauser (FSM), Tyler DeVries (CCM), and myself. It was a welcomed trip to venture away from Minnesota, enjoy some warm sun, and relax after a very successful 2018 year.



We flew out of Minneapolis on Wednesday, April 24th early in the morning, had a 2-hour layover in Atlanta, then arrived in Aruba at about 3:00pm local time. After checking into the resort, we were able to relax by the pool and converse with people from other markets. The whole trip was beneficial for networking and hearing how others succeeded in different areas of the country.



Throughout our time in Aruba we relaxed by the beach and enjoyed some excursions that were planned out. We were able to go out on a catamaran ride one night to see the sunset from the water. Another day we rode around the island in a jeep to see the Natural Pool, Baby Natural Bridge, the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, Alto Vista chapel, and the California Lighthouse. It was a unique way to see the island and all of it’s beauty.



Overall, the trip was very memorable. I became much closer with two of my colleagues that work in operations as well as learn from some award-winning members from other franchise locations. I have to give a huge thank you to our whole team at City Wide Maintenance of Minnesota for making this possible. It’s always a team effort and none of this would have been possible without all of my colleagues.

Leadership Meeting

Mitch Brunette: Vice President - Director of Operations

Earlier this month we traveled to Luisberg, Kansas so Greg, Brian, Tyler Olson and myself could get together for our quarterly leadership meeting.  The goal and objectives of these meetings are for us as a leadership team to consider challenges, growth and opportunities that we can plan for and work on to help better serve our teams and clients.

This trip was a lot of fun for me, as I was able to bring my wife, Liz, and son, Bennett, with me.  My son loves riding tractors and playing with equipment, so the opportunity to ride around in a John Deer Gator (even though my wife comes from a red tractor Case IH Family) and get a couple tractor rides made for a great trip.

Bennett had a blast playing with Greg’s two boys, William and Thomas, while doing his best to avoid their new puppy, Hunter, as much as possible. 

We got some good work done, watched Tiger on his way to winning the masters, and got some good off hours time in playing games, cutting down trees and brush, and enjoying good company!

Happy Spring everyone!

Hope everyone has made it through the winter, including our annual April spring snow storm, and is getting excited for nicer weather and getting outside.

My wife, Rachel, and I am pretty excited for the warmer weather, so we can begin working on projects around our new house.  We purchased a new house in Minnetonka with a large fenced in yard for the dogs, so they are very excited as well.  It's been a week since we moved in, and the to-do list seems to be growing quickly but we are excited to put our own touch on things and make it our own.

National Tri-Level Tournament Palm Springs

Adam Gustad: Sales Executive

This past weekend I participated in my 2nd straight BNP Paribas National Tri-Level Tennis tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Palm Springs California.  My team and I won our section MN/ND/SD/WI to advance to the national draw.  Unfortunately, we lost our final match, that would have put us in the Final Four of the tournament to a team from Texas. This tournament is always difficult for us in the North because we haven’t played outside in 6-8 months, compared to some of the teams that play outdoors year-round.  My doubles partner and I did have one of the biggest wins in the tournament beating the 2x defending national champions in our first match. My partner is originally from England and I grew up taking lessons from him.  So, to be able to go to tournaments like this is a pretty great feeling, as I have worked with him for the last 16 years.
Apart from playing tennis, participants get free tickets to the pro matches where we get to watch Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and other pros.  During the tournament you run into some famous people every year.  This year my list included Peter Dante, who is in many Adam Sandler movies, as well as RedFoo from LMFAO. 

The weather every year is unbeatable, especially coming from Minnesota in March.

I wanted to take a minute to introduce Adam Gustad, our newest Sales Executive covering the East Territory in Minnesota!  We found Adam late in our interview process, and are very glad we did!

Adam has a background in sales.  His previous positions provided him with many skills that have allowed him to come into City Wide and be successful quickly in his first month.

Outside of work, Adam is a competitive tennis player and coach, as well as a dominant Fantasy Football champ!  We look forward to getting to know more about Adam in the coming years.

FMSC

Clare Ten Pas: Facility Services Manager

Our team volunteered last week at Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that works to provide nutritionally complete meals for malnourished children around the world. At each packing event, the volunteers work together in an assembly line to fill packages of food that get sent around the world to feed children in need. The team at FMSC make it a friendly and fun competitive event, and encourage each team to compete against the other volunteers to see who can pack up the most boxes of food. The last time City Wide volunteered at FMSC, we split ourselves into two teams and competed against each other instead of the rest of the volunteers. The jury is officially still out on which team won, although it certainly wasn’t my team that lost. On Wednesday, we decided to combine our efforts and compete together as one City Wide team against all of the other volunteers. It doesn’t matter, although for the record, City Wide did have the highest number of packed boxes. But who’s counting.

Healthy competition is a big part of our company culture, but the biggest reason we wanted to pack the largest amount of boxes was because the ultimate goal is to feed as many children in need as possible. As a whole, all of the volunteers during our session filled enough packages of food to feed 111 children in Haiti for an entire year. It was incredibly rewarding to hear those results, but there is always more work to be done. I’m sure we’ll be back soon to hopefully beat our own record and send even more packages of food to children in need!

Welcome, Mitch Whiting!

I would like to take a minute to introduce Mitch Whiting, our newest FSM covering the Central Metro Territory!  We had a lot of fun getting to know Mitch in the interview process and we are glad he came to join us. 

Mitch has a background as a GM at Enterprise Rent-a-Car prior to coming to join us, and held numerous other roles during his time there.  Since he’s been with City Wide, we had about 3-4 fun weeks going out to see clients and various people, having the opportunity to introduce ourselves as “Mitch and this is also Mitch” while watching the puzzled looks on their faces.

Fortunately, Mitch started just in time to make it to our Holiday party where he had an opportunity to get to know most of our team in a non-work setting and we had the opportunity to meet his fiancĂ©, Melissa (Mel), as well.
